The Nulands Gated Farmlands Narok tour on 18th February was the best we have had in 2017.  It was unique in that three groups set out in Nairobi from different locations to meet in Narok town.  One group met at Syokimau Soham petrol Station, the other group started their journey from Nuland’s offices in Kilimani while the third group set off from Nairobi CBD.

After a brief stop-over in Narok Town, the party was at the first demo farm in Majimoto phase 2 at 11am. A brief history and geography of the area was shared and a pre tour Q&A session was held. The group then visited a few sold out phases of the gated farmlands before visiting the location of the proposed new phase 14.

During the tour, the team was able to see clients’ and demonstration farms where crops such as hay, sunflower, bean and onion crops had been farmed before and were now either ploughed awaiting the April rains or awaiting to be ploughed. In some of the farms where trees were planted earlier, the team was able to see the different types of trees that can grow in the area which include fruit trees, medicinal trees, wood trees and ornamental trees.

Before heading for lunch at a lodge in Ewaso Nyiro town, the team visited phase 1 of the Narok Gated Farmlands where Nulands has demonstrated mixed farming on a 5 acre parcel. On this parcel they were able to see poultry farming, passion fruit, pawpaw and assorted fruit farming, bee keeping, and rotational block farming of various crops. They were able to see blocks where onions, garlic, peas, tomatoes, beans and sunflower had been harvested in the last crop season.

After lunch, the team was able to be back in Narok Town by 3:30 pm with some members getting a chance to buy some natural-herbs grazed goat meat to take home. One of the teams was interested in seeing the Nulands Narok Town plots project at Ilmashariani Limanet area – the proposed location of the New Narok Town Center.
